Short Course on Companies – Getting to Square 1

The Security Breach of MyFitnessPal

It was reported on March 29, 2018 that more than 150 million users’ data of a popular fitness app called MyFitnessPal had been hacked. The data which was stolen comprised of the users’ usernames, email addresses and passwords. This company then immediately notified their users through emails and in-app messaging after they had noticed than there was unauthorized access to the data on February. The company urged their users to take immediate actions and change their passwords. Unfortunately, the identity of the hacker/s, who stole the data of millions of users is still unknown.

Under Armour, MyFitnessPal’s parent company, then claimed that their users’ financial information were not affected by the breach in any way. The damage of the data breach is considered moderate since the company does not require any government-issued identifiers like driver’s license numbers or social security numbers. Currently, the company is working on figuring out how the hackers had the ability to get into their system without being noticed.

And although having your fitness and dietary progress stolen may seem like it doesn’t matter, the information can still have bigger power than what the users may think. For example, the app has the ability to collect precise performance and the location data of its users. Meaning, if someone else has access to a user’s account, they will be able to know where exactly a user is and how fast the user is going. The users will then be placed in potential danger and can be easily tracked by the person who has their data.

Securing The Data

This incident is an important reminder for everyone that any type of data can easily be hacked in this age of modern technology. Here then, are some of the most important tips and tricks that one can do in order to individually secure their private data.

Setting Complex Passwords

While some people may prefer generic and easy password, it is still best to at least put an effort in setting your passwords. Though making your password more complex may seem too easy, this may give the hackers a hard time in cracking your password and therefore giving more time for the app’s company to fix the issue and have your important data secured.

2. Knowing the App’s Terms and Services Conditions

While a lot of people like skipping on the terms and services, it is still very important that users know and learn what exactly they’re getting themselves into. It is very important that the users are aware of the capabilities of the app itself.

While data breaches like these are common these days, and companies have the means to protect its users, it is still best if users take precautionary measures themselves.
